POLE-LATHE
The pole-lathe is a wood turning lathe powered by pedalling a foot pedal attached to a flexible pole.  The technology is very simple but astonishingly effective.  Pole-lathes have been in use for about a thousand years and here in Germany gradually died out in the last century.

Pole-lathes are cheap, quiet and safe.  They are easy to learn to use, and offer a pleasant way to develop your eye for form and design and take gentle exercise at the same time.
